7 Signs You Have High Dopamine Levels

Dopamine is a neurotransmitter (a substance that works in the brain) released in situations considered pleasant, such as enjoying delicious food, having sex and winning a challenge. This substance generates nerve impulses that promote a feeling of reward, so we associate these situations with pleasure.

However, like everything in life, too much dopamine is harmful. When our body releases more dopamine than normal or when our receptors are more responsive than average, the exacerbated effect of this neurotransmitter can make us more likely to develop disorders such as dependence (addiction), schizophrenia and Parkinson’s disease. Know seven signs that can indicate an exaggerated action of dopamine:

1. You tend to have compulsive behaviors

Exacerbated levels of dopamine are related to compulsive behaviors that generate feelings of pleasure, and this can range from alcohol abuse to excessive cell phone use and trichotillomania (the recurrent and irresistible urge to pull out body hair).

This is because this neurotransmitter acts on the limbic system, the region of the brain responsible for feeling reward and learning through positive reinforcement. Thus, when a person “gives in” to compulsive behavior, he experiences a period of well-being – even if it is something harmful to his health.

2. You’re too extroverted

Being an extrovert is neither a good nor a bad trait, it’s just the way you are. However, if you find that you often reveal personal details to strangers and then regret or make people feel uncomfortable for asking a question that is too intimate, this could indicate an excess of dopamine.

Social interaction is a stimulus for the release of this transmitter and generates a sense of reward. So extraversion is, in part, a consequence of this pleasurable effect we feel when interacting with other people.

3. You have symptoms of mania

Mania is a mood disorder characterized by euphoria, so that the individual has agitation, less need for sleep, exacerbated self-esteem and self-confidence, increased libido, compulsive speech and irritability, among other behaviors. In hypomania, these symptoms also appear, but they are discreet and do not get in the way of the person’s life (they just seem more communicative and willing than usual).

These two conditions are related to an increased level of dopamine in the brain and often appear in alternation with periods of depression, as in bipolar disorder.

4. You are always suspicious of something

Dopamine makes us more alert and, in excess, can lead to paranoia – something that happens to people who suffer from schizophrenia, who can hallucinate and feel that they are being persecuted.

5. You get too excited about challenges and achievements

Everyone likes the feeling of winning a contest or achieving a goal, but people with dopamine excess are even more euphoric in the face of these situations.

Challenge and victory are factors that stimulate a sense of reward mediated by this neurotransmitter, so that, in individuals who already have a certain predisposition, this can increase the risk of developing an addiction to gambling and betting, for example.

6. Your gut is always stuck

Constipation can be caused by several factors, the main one being a lack of fiber in the diet, but it can also be a result of increased levels of dopamine. So, if you are suffering from constipation and you experience other symptoms on this list, be sure to report them to your doctor.

7. You take your problems out of food

Almost everyone has sought solace in a brigadier when things didn’t go so well, but this is even more frequent in people who have too much dopamine. Again, the explanation for this is that food – often fatty or sugary foods – also triggers the feeling of reward.

Having any of the above characteristics does not necessarily mean that you have higher than normal levels of dopamine, as they can all be a consequence of other factors.
