6 practical ways to open jars

Opening pots – some say that this is one of the main reasons why a woman marries a man. Jokes aside, unscrewing the lids of those canned food jars may not be the simplest of tasks, especially when you are a member of the female portion of the population. Before you run out to ask your husband, boyfriend, father or neighbor for help, why not try one of the techniques below?

1. Take the pressure off

Most pots become difficult to open because air exerts pressure from the inside to the outside. So the logical solution is to allow this air to escape the glass and then remove the lid more easily. To do this, just use the tip of a knife or the handle of a spoon, for example, inserting them between the side of the lid and the glass and moving them like a lever.

2. Use hot water

Heat has the power to expand the metal from which the lids of glass jars are made, which makes it a good ally when opening them. Simply soak the pot in warm water for a few minutes or pour it over it. Warming the lid with a hair dryer can also be a good idea.

3. Not using your hands

The skin can be quite slippery when trying to open a jar. To eliminate the inconvenience, it is worth investing in the old trick of the paper napkin – or shirt, or towel, or rubber glove. Using these objects can make the pull you exert on the lid much more powerful and, consequently, more efficient.

4. Hit the bottom of the pot

The same principle of releasing the pressure with a cutlery applies to this technique, but it is a little less delicate. Turn the jar upside down and, keeping it firmly held with one hand, tap the bottom of the object with the other, in order to force the air out the sides of the lid. Then turn it over and open it normally.

5. Hit the lid of the pot

Hitting the lid of the jar against an object or furniture – here you can let your imagination run wild and use the sink, the counter, a wooden spoon, a can of preserves or anything else. Just give the lid a dry blow, at an angle of approximately 45º. The blow will relieve the pressure exerted by the air and the lid will come off more easily. Be careful, if you choose this technique, not to hit it with exaggerated force – which would break the glass and render its contents unusable, in addition to causing injury.

6. Use a special tool

There is a kind of kitchen utensil on the market especially designed for opening pots. It is an instrument similar to a pliers, with different sizes of “holes” that must be fitted into the cover, rotating the object afterwards. In short, this type of tool allows the traction exerted on the cover to be greater. You can find it in stores that specialize in household items.
