5 Simple Ways to Tell If You Have Posture Problems

What affects body posture?

But first, let’s talk about what can cause each vertebra to be incorrectly positioned.

Cervical vertebrae (headache, bags under the eyes)

The first seven cervical vertebrae are associated with the great vessels that supply the brain. Incorrect neck position can affect blood circulation. The results of this can be headache, vision problems and tired eyes, with puffiness and bags.

Base of the neck and chest (pains that seem to be in the heart and also in the stomach)

This region has nerves connected to the heart. Wrong positioning of the spine not only decreases the space for the heart muscle to function, but the curved vertebrae can compress such nerve endings. Therefore, pain that apparently comes from the heart, sometimes indicates that it is necessary to take care of body posture.

The same area of ​​the spine is connected to the main organs involved in digestion. So maybe the stomach pain is not from gastritis, but from a wrong posture.

Lower sternum (bathroom problems)

5 Tests to help identify body posture problems

Our suggestion is that you do five very simple tests. They help to determine the possible presence of hidden problems linked to posture. Each of them only takes a few minutes to complete. You can even do it without leaving the computer.

1. Thumbs to hip

Hold a pencil in each hand and relax your arms. Where are the pencils pointing? If it goes forward, you have successfully passed the test. But if the pencils are turned towards your hip, at a greater or lesser angle, you possibly have problems with your body posture.

The position of the hands directly depends on the rhomboid muscle. It connects the sixth cervical vertebra and the scapula, therefore, makes the shoulders rotated backwards, placing the arms as in the image on the left. If this muscle is weak, the person walks hunched over, the shoulders go forward and the arms rotate as in the image on the right.

2. Ankles further in in relation to the feet

Place your hand vertically on the inside of the foot, a few centimeters apart. Relax your leg. If your ankle touches your hand, you may have a wrong curve in your spine.

3. Not being able to touch the chest with the chin

Tilt your head forward as far as possible, but without opening your mouth. If you tuck your chin to your chest effortlessly, chances are your cervical spine is in good shape. But if it is difficult or impossible to complete the test, you need to pay more attention to posture.

4. Arch your back a lot

Stand close to a wall, touching it with the back of your head, shoulder blades, buttocks and heels. If your back angle is almost exaggerated or approaching 90 degrees, you may have problems with your body posture.

5. Get goosebumps for no apparent reason

Observe the way you breathe in a moment of relaxation and without feeling cold. If, as you exhale or inhale, you notice that the hairs on your arms stand on end, pay special attention to your posture.

This also has to do with the rhomboid muscle (the one we talked about earlier). The weakness of this muscle is compensated for by shortening the pectoral muscle, which in turn is associated with breathing and can compress blood vessels and nerves. Hence, the hairs stand on end with the breath.
