5 sexist insults we should stop using

Have you noticed that even when it comes to offending a man, common sense ends up offending his mother, for example? See the most popular insult in Brazil: “filho da puta”.

Often, some expressions end up being part of our vocabulary and we don’t even realize what they really mean. Even so, it’s never too late to review concepts, right? So check out five curse words that should be abolished from our lives:

1. Whore and Whore

It is quite true that, as it is so used, in some cases this term is no longer linked to sexual connotations. It’s a very different thing to say “she’s such a bitch, she kissed five guys in one night” and “can you believe that bitch didn’t invite me to her birthday?”

“Puta” and “vadia” can often replace “cretina”, for example, which exempts the root of the issue: these words gained a negative connotation, as they denote that it is wrong for a woman to have a relationship with several men. It’s that old story: a guy who catches them all is THE MAN, a girl who catches them all is rejected for that.

2. Bad food

Stop and think: if a woman has an intense sex life, has several partners, is self-possessed… she is a whore. And that is ~pretty ugly~, according to common sense. On the other hand, if the mine is irritated and/or speaking her mind, without patience with insults… then she is badly eaten. Meaning: she should be ~giving more~. And this paradox is just one of the problems with the infamous term “bad food”.

But, perhaps, the most disconcerting thing is: why does the ~blame~ for the supposed bad sex fall only on the woman? First of all, bad sex shouldn’t even be used as a pretext to attack someone, but since it’s being used… shouldn’t this curse fall on the man who is “eating badly”?

3. Son of a bitch

This curse involves two very problematic points. First, because he obviously swears at the mother of the person you’re trying to offend. What’s the point in that? What does she have to do with the situation?

Secondly: once again the offense concerns the woman’s sexuality – or the fact that she works as a prostitute, depending on the point of view. Until when, my people?

4. horn

If he doesn’t curse the guy’s mother, then he curses his wife. Congratulations humanity!

“Ah, but in that case, you’re saying the guy is so gross that his wife has a lover. In other words: the name-calling is totally directed at him”, some will say. And we say it again: just stop getting women into swearing. What do they have to do with the situation?

5. Faggot

You don’t even need to explain much, right? From the moment homosexuality is used as a curse word, this is a very clear problem. And, recently, the Paysandu fans, the football team from Belém do Pará, showed that it is possible to evolve in this direction. In the middle of the game, the people in the stands opened an LGBT flag and then the fans released a statement apologizing for the homophobic lyrics they used to demoralize the opposing team.

This commendable attitude, coming from Pará, is proof that it makes sense to rethink certain expressions and discard them, without losing the sportiness. Once and for all, we need to understand that words are not simply harmless. They are part of a cultural construction that, at the end, is generating discrimination and violence.
