Nothing worse than getting your nails done and seeing them peel off a few days later. That’s because keeping nails done and enameled is a habit that many women like to cultivate, despite being far from being a female obligation.
And due to lack of time or money, sometimes the nail polish remains chipped for much longer than planned, until you decide to remove it completely.
However, some tricks can help you keep the color on your nails longer, without harming or damaging them.
See below the tips from dermatologist Roberta Ribas and Maria Silvia Benedini, a member of the Maria Joaquina Beauty Club franchise network, to keep your nails healthy and enhance the duration of the nail polish:
1. Make sure your nails are clean before painting them
According to Benedini, the absorption of enamel is greater when the nails are completely clean, without residues of enamel or any other product, such as cuticle creams. This is because the residue makes the pigmentation uneven, and therefore prone to peeling.
To ensure that the nails are completely clean and free of these residues, the tip is to use the help of a toothpick with a small piece of cotton at the end, doing the same process that is done to clean them after enamelling. This will prevent residue from remaining in the hardest-to-reach corners of your nails.
2. Prefer newer and more fluid nail polishes
“What few people know is that the quality and age of the enamel also interfere with its durability”, says Maria. The older the enamel, the worse its consistency and quality.
Therefore, prefer newer enamels, which still have a more fluid and lighter consistency. To avoid this problem, periodically clean your nail polish set, leaving only the newest ones. In addition to greater durability, the finish and pigmentation are much more beautiful.
3. File the tip of the nails after the nail polish dries
The nail polish is applied to the nails with a brush, so its finish on the nail tips is not always uniform. However, when there are “tips” of nail polish alone and left over, they can accelerate the peeling of the product.
Therefore, at the end of the enamelling, file the tip of the nails, with the intention of making the content more uniform and level. In some cases, the tip can be left without enamel, gently using your thumb, as in the video below.
4. Protect your nails during housework
According to Roberta, washing dishes, clothes and other household chores can help with enamel peeling. As they are inevitable in everyday life, the tip is to protect your nails during activities. Try wearing plastic gloves, which can be found at any drug store or grocery store.
5. Avoid hand contact with alcohol and similar products
In the same vein as domestic activities, products such as alcohol, bleach and others can damage enamel. If they are part of your daily life, be sure to use them, but make sure your nails are protected. Gloves are welcome here, as in addition to the durability of the enamel, they also prevent skin dryness caused by this type of product.
It is important to know that the number of enamel layers is not decisive to guarantee its durability. “What will determine this is the health of the patient’s nails, their habits and the quality of the enamel”, reinforces the dermatologist.
Remember that, before putting into practice the tricks to make your nail polish last longer, you must make sure that you are not allergic to the product. Test a small part of a nail and watch for any reaction.
