5 characteristics of fungal acne to identify the disease and how to prevent

Often confused with common acne, Ptyrosporic Folliculitis, popularly known as fungal acne, is caused by the proliferation of the Malassezia Furfur fungus. Next, understand more about the subject and check out the explanations of dermatologist Priscila Daiane Pavezzi.

What is fungal acne?

Dr. Priscila, a professor at PUCPR, explains that fungal acne “is a rash that is very reminiscent of acne vulgaris – that dreaded skin lesion that almost all teenagers have at some point – however, it is caused by the overgrowth of yeasts (fungi) from the Malassezia family, inflaming the pilosebaceous unit”.

The presence of fungi on the skin is natural. However, the imbalance between the growth of these organisms and the defenses of the human skin causes the appearance of fungal acne. According to the dermatologist, some factors contribute to the proliferation of fungi: “hot and humid weather, conditions that lead to increased skin oil and clog pores, increased sweating and use of some medications (antibiotics, corticosteroids, immunosuppressants)”.

Fungal acne symptoms

Below, check out some characteristics, listed by the specialist, that will help you identify fungal acne:

  • Small bumps, with pus or red, located near the hairline, sides of the face, chin and on the upper part of the trunk and arms;
  • The lesions have the same shape, that is, they are monomorphic, a characteristic that differs from acne vulgaris;
  • In most cases, itching is a present symptom;
  • Does not respond to conventional treatment for acne vulgaris;
  • It is more common in teenagers.

If you notice any of these characteristics in your lesions, it is important to seek the help of a dermatologist.

The treatment

Treatment for this type of acne is done with antifungal medications. There are options for topical use, that is, applied to the skin, or orally, whose use depends on the severity of the condition and the patient’s history. Dr. Priscila highlights that “as these are drugs that can harm the liver, it is important to be evaluated and monitored by a dermatologist”.

how to prevent

To prevent the emergence of fungal acne, Dr. explains that it is important to avoid wearing “tight clothes and synthetic fabrics that occlude the skin; very hot and long baths; cosmetics (sunscreen, creams, make-up, etc.) that increase oiliness; use of antibiotics and corticosteroids for long periods without medical supervision”.

In addition, to help with prevention, the dermatologist recommends “not being sweaty for too long”, changing clothes frequently, wearing cotton fabrics and using soaps and cleansing gels suitable for your skin type.

Now, you already know how to identify fungal acne. If symptoms and discomfort persist, avoid suffering by seeking professional help. Another dermatological problem is the appearance of dark spots on the face. Check out the article to find out more.
