5 benefits of red tea and information about its consumption

Red tea is an excellent ally for health, capable of improving the quality of life of those who consume it. But many people still have doubts about this drink. That’s why we talked to nutritionist Paula Vargas (CRN 10 7321 – SC), who revealed all the benefits of this tea. Check it out below!

red tea benefits

According to Paula, “red tea, like white tea, comes from the same plant as green tea (Camellia sinensis). The main difference between these teas is the degree of fermentation, with red tea having 80%, white tea having 5% and green tea having zero. In addition, the concentration of polyphenols, tannins and caffeine present in each tea also varies.”

“Red tea undergoes a special fermentation process, thus having medicinal properties unlike any other tea. It is traditionally used to lose weight, cleanse the body and increase the quality of life of those who consume it”, explains the nutritionist.

In addition, “it has benefits to prevent obesity, is antidiabetic, anticancer, helps to lose weight, reduces high cholesterol and visceral fat. Tea is also a source of vitamins C, K, B1 and B2”, adds Paula. See more benefits below:

  • Decreases oxidative stress: the nutritionist adds that “red tea contains a good amount of antioxidants, preventing the action of free radicals and reducing oxidative stress resulting from bad habits (sleeping little, inadequate diet, consumption of alcohol, cigarettes, stress or excessive physical activity in athletes, for example)”.
  • Helps in weight loss: Paula explains that “red tea acts directly on the metabolism of lipids and white adipose tissue. It has been shown to reduce fat concentrations, reduce weight gain and even increase caloric expenditure, causing weight loss. Several studies have shown that tea can reduce adipocyte differentiation and proliferation, lipogenesis, fat mass, body weight, fat absorption, appetite and plasma levels of triglycerides, free fatty acids, cholesterol, glucose, insulin and leptin.”
  • Lowers cholesterol: “continuous use of this tea can be favorable to reduce LDL-c levels. Furthermore, continuous use can reduce adipose tissue triglycerides through lipoprotein lipase, in addition to being able to reduce visceral fat and LDL-c in the body.”
  • It is antioxidant: the professional explains that “this tea is also anticancer. It contains polyphenols that are useful in treating disease, inflammation and oxidative stress.” Therefore, those who consume this tea have a better quality of life.
  • It is digestive and diuretic: “because it has depurative properties, it helps to accelerate metabolism, favors digestion and activates circulation, preventing water retention”.

Lots of benefits, right? But the nutritionist gives the tip: “It is important to remember that no tea by itself works miracles. Red tea works as a complement to a balanced and healthy diet combined with proper lifestyle habits”.

Consumption and contraindications

About consumption and contraindications, Paula says that “it is recommended to consume one to two cups a day, just like any other tea. Red tea contains caffeine and can be harmful for people who are sensitive to it, such as in cases of insomnia or hypertension, and it is not recommended for pregnant women.”
