16 Secrets of the Sistine Chapel Frescoes That Even Some Tourist Guides Don’t Know

The ceiling of the Sistine Chapel is one of the greatest works of Renaissance art that has survived to this day. Its dimension is equal to the area of 1/6 of a football field, and it is incredible, especially considering that all the paintings were created in less than 5 years. Interestingly, Michelangelo, who considered himself a sculptor and not a painter, had never tried mural painting. Perhaps that’s why the great Italian didn’t really want to take the job (although some biographers believe he agreed to do so mainly out of a desire to demonstrate his great abilities).

The Sistine Chapel, located in the Vatican, was built between 1473 and 1481, by order of Pope Sixtus IV, and later named after him. The most famous artists of the time, including Sandro Botticelli, were invited to paint the walls of the place, and the ceiling was not ignored either: a master called Piermatteo d’Amelia drew golden stars on the blue background.

In 1504, cracks appeared in the roof, which were covered with bricks. However, Pope Julius II decided to decorate it again, and in 1508 the famous Florentine Michelangelo Buonarroti began to create his most important work.

Since 1871, the Sistine Chapel is the only place where the election of the new pope takes place. From one of its windows, white smoke is released announcing that a new head of the Catholic Church has been chosen, who will soon be presented to the whole world.
