16 Buildings That Seem to Balance and Defy All Kinds of Logic

When a child asks us to draw a house or when we want to draw any property, we generally draw a square with a triangle on top. Although this is the basic design that comes to mind, there are buildings that completely deviate from this architectural pattern and show us that a house can be very different from anything we know. In some cases, the architecture is so strange that it seems to defy all sorts of logic.

Today the awesome.club brings 15 buildings that show just that. When we look at them, we don’t know if we are amazed or if we try to hold their walls.

1. Celanese Building

It’s hard to look at this grand building on such a small base and not wonder if the builder started from the top down or ran out of materials. However, there is no risk that the work of modern architecture, which is located in Mexico City — an earthquake-prone region — will collapse. The building was built in 1968 and its base is made of concrete. The design was only used to improve the functionality of its interior.

2. Tower of Pisa

The tower of Pisa became more famous than the cathedral of the same city because of its tilt. But don’t think this happened on purpose. It started to tilt at 1173. Apparently, there was no way to fix the problem and it became more and more inclined until, in 1990, it ended up being closed. In 2008, after 3 years of studies and work, the famous tower was stabilized and, in 2010, reopened to tourism.

3. The Interlace

4. The house unlike Trassenheide

Perhaps one might think that the house was blown away by the wind and ended up like that. No, it was created precisely for people to enter through the ceiling. The property is located in the spa town of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, in northern Germany. It was done backwards so that tourists would have a different perception of what they are used to. The work wants to demonstrate that nothing is impossible.

5. Tiger Hill Pagoda

Also known as the Leaning Tower of China, it is located in the city of Suzhou. It was built in 907 AD, but unlike the Leaning Tower of Pisa, it has been tilted by the wear and tear of time. It is truly impressive that after more than a thousand years it is still standing. In 1957 works were carried out for the building to be stabilized. Today, the tower is open to the public.

6. View Tower

These twin towers are located in Las Vegas, they lean one to each side and their design has received many awards.

7. Mystery Spot

Although it doesn’t look like it, this house hasn’t suffered at all; it was built that way. It is a tourist attraction located in California. Its objective is to create a different visual reality due to its great inclination that challenges perceptions of height and orientation of objects in space.

Everything that happens on the property is very strange: the ball rolls upwards and the water rises instead of falling. Scientists explain that this happens because it has a 20º inclination, causing everything to be distorted.

9. The teahouse

So far we have seen that real estate can be maintained even on apparently fragile structures. But the following case is extreme. Located in Japan, this building is called Takasugi-an, which literally translates to ‘tea house’. It’s probably the last place a person would think to go for tea. To enter, you have to be barefoot and climb a ladder supported by logs, as if it were a tree house.

10. OCAD University

This photo is real: the design is white with black squares, which makes it almost impossible to find a window. The building is at the top (at a height of 9 floors) and provides a beautiful view of Toronto (Canada). The university building also offers a beautiful shade to the students who stay below. In addition, architecture is quite innovative and youthful, which is precisely why it attracts so many students.

11. American Copper

12. Leaning Tower of Toruń

Although it looks very modern, the tower in Toruń, Poland, dates back to medieval times and was built in the 13th century to protect the city from enemies. However, as it was lifted over uneven ground, it began to tilt. The building was once a prison, a blacksmith shop and today it is a cultural center.

13. Capital Gate

This leaning building is located in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates and is known as the Leaning Tower of Abu Dhabi. It is currently the steepest building in the world.

14. Bałtyk

The Bałtyk building is in Poland and is the fifth largest building in Poznań. It was designed to be seen in different ways depending on where the viewer is. The building may even look incomplete; i.e. still under construction.

15. The towers door of europe

the towers door of Europe, in the Spanish capital, Madrid, they are also known as KIO Towers. They are the world’s first inclined skyscrapers and were built between 1989 and 1996. Because of their steepness, elevators only reach the 13th floor. Each room has a different size and shape.

16. Tower of Suurhusen

The Suurhusen tower is in Germany and occupied the place of the most incinerated building in the world until it was surpassed by the aforementioned Capital Gate. It was built in the 13th century and the slope has increased over the years.

In Brazil, a classic case of crooked buildings were the buildings in Santos, on the coast of São Paulo. And you, do you know any other cases?
