15 Stars Uninspired by Their Roles But Who Killed It Anyway

Have you ever found yourself having to do some unwanted activity? In the routine of our professional life, it is natural that we need to fulfill boring tasks or jobs, some of which do not even seem to generate any results! We believe that everyone wants to play a prominent role, with clear and easily recognizable results, there’s only one problem: who will do the boring but necessary tasks and run essential projects, but with a high risk of failure?

O awesome.club will show cases of film and TV stars who were not satisfied with their “jobs”. Even so, they managed to act with great competence in films and series that became great successes. Sometimes repeating the feat in several works!

1. Andrew Garfield as Spider-Man

Before being Spider-Man, Andrew Garfield was recognized for his performance in the film The Social Network, which tells the origin of Facebook, with Jesse Eisenberg. His notoriety, however, had a rather… modest dimension. It was Spider-Man’s climb up the skyscraper of fame that became uncomfortable for the actor. Andrew thought he was too young to handle all that superhero-level notoriety, which made playing Peter Parker exhausting.

In 2014, the second Spidey movie starring Garfield was released. It did not have the expected success, which undermined the sequel that would complete the new trilogy. Andrew, then, followed a more authorial path, even being nominated for an Oscar for Until the Last Man. He received other awards and became a highly regarded actor. He’s already quoted for the statuette again! After years away from the uniform, he came to be considered by many to be the best Spider-Man in cinema. And who doesn’t want to see him in the new Marvel movie? Andrew Garfield did a great job, but not everything he lived through was pleasant, was it?

2. Sally Field as May Parker

Yeah, yeah, apparently the cast of The Amazing Spider-Man weren’t big fans of what they were doing, right? Sally Field ended up working on the feature because of a producer friend, with whom she had a long history, and knowing that it would be her last job. The actress did not have an aversion to the role of May Parker, but she thought the character was not very “three-dimensional”. Which limited her performance, since there wasn’t much space to contribute with a more authorial version of Peter Parker’s aunt. Perhaps this frustration in an actress with Sally Field’s resume is understandable, but you can’t say that her performance was sloppy or botched, can you?

3. Marisa Tomei as May Parker

Again a “teioso” movie?! Yeah, but apparently there is a common element in the dissatisfaction of those who play characters in this universe. They end up scoring a lot of stars in their performances, even those who already had a strong past resume. In the case of Marisa Tomei, the big problem was having assumed the role of mother figure for the first time. The surprise with the announcement of such a young actress, as the interpreter of Peter Parker’s aunt, was not small, but it soon became clear that the footprint of this May Parker was different. Even so, Marisa Tomei would have preferred to have a more open range of future options, leaving maternal roles for later.

This did not prevent the actress from acting well. It also didn’t stop her from being able to see new dimensions for her version of Aunt May, which we might see in the next Spider-Man movie. And it’s not new for Marvel to change the course of characters to enrich their universe. Sometimes an actor dissatisfied with his role, but committed to a good job, ends up showing that changing the character’s arc can end up being a sure shot!

4. Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye

The Avengers — The Avengers
Collection: $1.51 billion (2012)
IMDB Note: 8

In 2011, Jeremy Renner first appeared as Hawkeye in Thor. Making a cameo, he was not even credited at the end of the film. The following year, however, he was already part of the main team of the Avengers. Not exactly in the role of a good guy, since he spent most of the film as – in the words of the actor himself – “a lackey of Loki”. Renner didn’t feel the character was taken advantage of as he should, so he suggested to Marvel that he kill Clint Barton already in Avengers. He even simulated heart attacks in the recordings to leave the option open!

Fortunately, your complaints have been heard. In Avengers: Age of Ultron, Barton and his family became key elements in the film. In Avengers: Endgame, Clint gained a dark side and even participated with Scarlett Johansson in one of the most remarkable moments of the Marvel saga. Now, the Hawkeye series has just debuted on Disney+, starring Renner and Hailee Steinfeld (as newcomer Kate Bishop). Even dissatisfied, the actor committed himself to his work and turned the situation around drastically. Success doesn’t always happen just doing what we like, does it?

5. Josh Brolin as Thanos

Have you ever noticed that superhero movies are wildly successful at the box office, but not everything is rosy, is it? When Josh Brolin said that playing Thanos was like “acting in a cheap theater without a set”, a lot of people were upset. But the actor was just reminiscing about his early career in the 1970s, when he worked in theaters with no budget for adequate structures. To act, an actor depends a lot on the interaction with the environment and the scene colleagues. Thanos, built using motion capture and CGI, required the actor to overuse his imagination most of the time, which is much more complicated and draining than it sounds.

Even with so much difficulty, it is unquestionable: Thanos is already one of the greatest villains in the history of cinema. And look, Brolin signed the contract without knowing the size of the participation he would have in the MCU. He liked the role for being a villain to all of the Avengers together. Until then, no antagonist had marked the public like Loki. It wasn’t easy at all, but Brolin’s Thanos changed that story!

6. Megan Fox as Mikaela Banes

Sometimes the work isn’t even bad, but the leadership ends up not pleasing. Megan Fox became a star after her performance in Transformers and didn’t exactly have a problem with her role, however, she couldn’t quite get along with director Michael Bay. After spilling the beans about this disagreement, she managed to piss off even Steven Spielberg, executive producer of the feature — the money guy, basically. Megan claimed to leave the franchise for new opportunities, but the truth is that her relationship with the “bosses” was too complicated to remain on paper.

The actress did not like how film recordings were conducted, but admitted that her criticisms were not mature. “Battling head-on” with those in charge is not a good strategy, even if covered in reason. Questioning with discretion and respect would probably have changed a lot. Still, Megan Fox fulfilled her role and helped start building a very lucrative universe. Even outside the franchise, the actress claims to have matured a lot with what she lived through. That’s great, isn’t it?!

7. Gwyneth Paltrow as Rosemary

In 2001, Love is Blind hit theaters with a purpose beyond entertainment: to show how perverse it is to judge others just by appearance. Gwyneth Paltrow played Rosemary, an obese young woman who becomes involved with the futile Hal. Like so many others, Rose’s crush was too attached to appearances, not very interested in actually meeting her girlfriends. After being hypnotized by a guru, Hal starts to “see” the inner beauty of women, seeing Rose as a thin woman, a mental “translation” that the film uses as an indication of this inner beauty.

The feature’s bullshit style doesn’t help the critical eye much, and Gwyneth Paltrow ended up embarrassed by the role she played. She also experienced constraints when wearing the “costume” of being obese. Still, the actress did a good job, managing to highlight the different forms she had in the film. The production was not a critical success, but for its time, it did well at the box office. Despite the ineffective message, maybe O Amor é Cego still works as a good denouncement. And maybe Rose’s interpreter doesn’t need to feel ashamed of having acted in the film precisely for that reason, what does she think?

8. Kate Winslet as Rose Dewitt Bukater

Have you ever heard of the Impostor Syndrome? Apparently Kate Winslet, aged 21 and making her debut in a James Cameron blockbuster, believed she was doing poorly in the composition of the role of Rose in Titanic. Well, at the time, the critics didn’t take it lightly either, and Winslet’s performance became almost a nightmare for the actress herself. To this day, she finds the film very difficult to watch and cannot help but weave criticism after criticism of the work done. It was difficult and exhausting for her, but was it a failure?

Titanic won 10 Oscars and became a worldwide phenomenon. For a long time it was the biggest collection in the history of cinema and, almost 25 years later, it is very difficult to find someone who does not know it and is not able to cite remarkable moments of the production. Even memes and jokes about the plot are commonplace in the popular imagination. Rose (or Kate) is inseparable from this success. Today the actress feels more competent and prepared, but, let’s face it: at 21 years old, at the beginning of her career, in a production of that size… Kate Winslet did a hell of a job, don’t you think?

9. Sean Connery as James Bond

Sean Connery lived a private drama for a long time, due to the notoriety achieved playing James Bond. Haunted by the idea of having become famous just for impersonating Agent 007, the actor believed that his career would come down to that, even declaring: “I hated Bond. I was terribly depressed for years, thinking about how the character had taken over my life.”

But perhaps Sir Connery discovered over time that it was he who played Bond, not the other way around. Today, most critics claim that Connery was the best of all and the star himself confessed to having made peace with the character, a long time ago. After all, the Scottish actor has had many other landmark roles. Still, his commitment to doing a job well done, even feeling “threatened” by it, left an incredible mark. 007 Against Goldfinger is considered the best film in the franchise to date. Like it or not what you’re doing, always do it well, right?

10. Daniel Craig as James Bond

James Bond again? So it is! But this time who suffered with the role was Daniel Craig. The actor already considers himself a perfectionist, which is enough to feel constantly dissatisfied with his own performance — imposter syndrome he calls it, isn’t it? But it was Quantum of Solace, the second film in which the star played Agent 007, that turned out to be a nightmare. In addition…
