15+ Curiosities of life in the Netherlands captured in a photo by internet users

That residents of the Netherlands prefer to move around the streets of the country by bicycle, we all know, is a well-known fact. But it’s one thing to know, and quite another to see it with your own eyes. Especially because an underground bicycle parking lot, for example, is not a common scene for us. And this European country still hides many other surprises.

We, from awesome.club, we love discovering new things about other countries through photos shared by Internet users. And today we invite you to explore the Netherlands with us. In the end, we prepared two interesting reports as a bonus. Check out!

“This was literally the first thing I saw in Amsterdam”

Here’s what an underground bicycle parking lot looks like

“The Dutch are very tall. I measure 1.56 m. This is how my attempts to touch up makeup in restaurants are usually.”

“There’s a piano in almost every major train station in the country. Anyone who wants to can play.”

“There is a promotion at the supermarket where you can buy a sausage-wrapped pizza”

“Mini library. People across the country put books on these shelves so others can read them for free.”

“Someone strapped their bike to a chair and thought that was enough to keep them from stealing it”

“An original 17th century bathroom in a house in the city of Leiden”

“I took this photo of a very interesting corner, but only later did I realize that the residents of the house are plants and not humans”

“It’s like this place was made especially for him”

Bonus № 1: in the Netherlands, even a neighbor with a drill can surprise you

When we rented an apartment, the window glass was already cracked. We had to ask the owner to change it, but we kept putting it off until, in the end, we bought the apartment and this problem became ours.

When it was no longer possible to extend, we requested the exchange. Two friendly grandmothers came to take the measurements and ordered the new glass, which was ready about two weeks later. The gentlemen came back and changed everything. The entire service cost 331.54 euros.

On the other side of the building, some neighbors are renovating and using a drill. It doesn’t bother me, but there are complaints in the residents’ chat. And they recently wrote: “It was very noisy, and my bedroom window broke. I don’t know why exactly.” I read this and laughed: “Good luck! I want to see proof that this was caused by the drill.” But imagine my surprise when the neighbors doing the renovations said, “We’ll pay for your window.” © alexaol / Pikabu

Bonus № 2: The Netherlands is a true paradise for cats

What is it like to be a cat in Amsterdam? I tell you it’s not bad at all. There are no cats living on the streets there. It just doesn’t. I don’t know how they did it, but I’m ready for a standing ovation.

And what about shelters? They rarely give the kittens in their care. Most of the time, locals offer to pay for the costs of a pet, a kind of “distance adoption”. And shelters also invite volunteers to help with care. To actually adopt a kitten, you have to pass a strict exam.

Because of this, local online sales sites are full of advertisements such as: “I accept a cat as a donation, I strongly request.” An ordinary cat costs between 100 – 200 euros, not to mention purebred ones.

In addition, every animal must be microchipped, otherwise its guardian will pay a fine. Veterinary services, of course, cost a “kidney”, so health plans for cats are quite common in the country.
