13 Things Babies Don’t Need That Most Parents Buy

When you’re a first-time parent, you can fall into the tempting compulsion to buy everything there is for babies. What usually happens is that, precisely out of emotion, expectation or uncertainty, parents get carried away and buy a multitude of accessories that babies never get to use.

The arrival of a child is a magical and extremely emotional event. Therefore, the awesome.club wants to offer new moms and dads some tips that can save them a lot of money.

1. Baby shoes

As cute and “curious” as a baby with tiny shoes may seem, the reality is that these shoes are totally unnecessary and impractical. Normally, before one year, babies do not walk and the size of their feet changes quickly. In addition, when you start to take your first steps, some experts recommend that you do it completely barefoot, as this stimulates many skills, such as balance – thanks to the tactile sensitivity of the sole of the foot, which reinforces your intelligence and psychomotricity.

2. Baby socks

Perhaps there is no father in the history of mankind who has not lost a sock from his daughter or son. Socks are also an unnecessary purchase. It is often believed that babies can catch a cold if their feet are uncovered, but this is just a myth. However, if you want your baby to feel warm and comfortable at the same time, it is best to buy coveralls that cover their feet.

3. Baby bathrobe

4. Baby soap

If you’re on your way to parenthood or parenthood, you must have realized by now that anything that has the word “baby” on it costs more. This even happens with soap. Babies don’t need much for bath time; for example, your skin is so soft and delicate that a simple, unscented, neutral bar soap is enough, according to studies. Avoid overly sophisticated and/or aromatic soaps, which can irritate and dry out your child’s skin.

5. Baby powder

For decades, baby powder has been a staple in a first-time parent’s closet. However, it has been found that its use is not only unnecessary, it can be very dangerous. Talc, due to its consistency, can cause breathing problems, eye irritation or choking (if the baby accidentally ingests too much). So just take it off your shopping list completely.

6. Baby dresses

Baby dresses are very cute, yes, but impractical and uncomfortable. Not only do they tend to cost twice as much as other clothes, they climb all the time on little girls’ bodies and can cause irritation. The most advisable thing is to wear them with unique and complete pieces, easy to unbutton, that allow mobility, especially when they start to crawl and/or walk. Also, remember that gender roles are not defined by dress or accessories.

7. Bath thermometer

8. Gloves to scratch the gum

Babies suffer a lot when teething starts to emerge; however, they must learn to deal with their own bodies without the interference of external elements. Scratching gloves can harbor pathogens from other surfaces; therefore, nothing better than your own little hands to scratch yourself. Just remember to keep your nails trimmed.

9. Small bibs

The bib is a very useful accessory, especially when babies start to eat solid foods. It guarantees (most of the time) that the clothes will not get stained so much; however, you must know how to choose the bib. Small ones, which only reach halfway up the chest, are totally unnecessary. The best are ones big enough to cover the child and allow him to explore with his hands.

10. Walkers

Walkers used to be used a lot a few decades ago, as they were believed to be the best for when little ones started to get up. However, experts have discovered over the years that these accessories can be harmful. Not only because they cause accidents at home (babies who fall, hit or throw objects at themselves) but also because they affect the correct development of legs, knees and back. Pediatricians recommend not using them, which is good news for parents’ pocketbooks.

11. Special liquid soap for baby clothes

If you have the opportunity, ask a grandmother how she washed babies’ clothes before there was a special soap for that. The label usually says that they have no smell, nor components that can irritate the skin. However, experts recommend some precautions when choosing the product:

Opt for a soap with a neutral and hypoallergenic formula. So anyone, regardless of price, that falls into that category will work.

Wash new clothes before use.

If machine washing, select the program for delicate items, with a low temperature and a gentle spin cycle.

Do not use fabric softener.

Dry clothes in the sun.

12. Baby blankets

Blankets seem to be a favorite baby shower gift, but they are unnecessary. In fact, during the first days of life, it is best not to wrap them too much, especially when they sleep, to avoid accidents. It is best to dress them in several layers of clothing that can be removed easily.

13. Crib pillows

Crib pillows are very unsafe and babies don’t need them to sleep, according to a study. They can be very pretty, but it’s best to keep them only as accessories. Maybe when the baby is a little over a year old, he can rest or play with them.

What other baby accessory did you buy that you never used? How did you invest your money in your daughter’s or son’s development?
