12 Actors Who Gave Up Roles in Successful Movies

The process of choosing actors for major cinema productions is usually long and full of well-known names. What the public sees on the big screen is the result of intense selection work. And, sometimes, the director imagines a certain actor to give life to this or that role, but, for various reasons, the artist chosen for the job ends up being another.

O awesome.club researched a list of actors and actresses who almost played great movie characters.

1. Emily Blunt / Black Widow and Peggy Carter

Apparently, actress Emily Blunt is not very interested in being part of the Marvel cinematographic universe, since several producers of different features have offered her roles of this type, but due to scheduling conflicts, the artist could not accept the proposals. The first of these roles was that of Peggy Carter, Captain America’s love interest in “Captain America: The First Avenger”. The second was that of Black Widow, Shield’s agent who first appeared in “Iron Man 2”. There were even rumors that she would play Captain Marvel, but the actress herself said that this was nothing more than fan desire.

2. Jim Carrey / Jack Sparrow

Director Gore Verbinksi’s first option to play Jack Sparrow was Jim Carrey, as Johnny Depp was still not seen as a big star, while Carrey already collected several successful films on his resume. The actor would have loved to give life to the infamous pirate, but he had to choose between “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Almighty”, so he ended up refusing the proposal. Anyway, as Disney has decided to reboot the franchise with other characters, maybe Jim will get a second chance.

3. Arnold Schwarzenegger / John McClane

In the early stages of production of “Die Hard”, the character of John McClane was offered to Schwarzenegger. The artist decided to refuse the proposal to venture into the comedy business, despite having received the suggestion to compose the character as if it were a sequel to “Comando para Matar”. The role was offered to several actors until it landed in the lap of Bruce Willis.

4. Matthew McConaughey / Jack Dawson

When the producers of “Titanic” began the casting process, one of the actors who applied for the role of Jack Dawson was Matthew McConaughey. Unfortunately for the actor, after some tests with Kate Winslet, the director vetoed it. In several interviews, McConaughey commented that he felt disappointed not to be cast in the role, as he had been satisfied with the auditions and fell in love with the role.

5. Pierce Brosnan / Batman

When Tim Burton started working on Batman, the director was being pressured by the production company to choose an actor known for action films. For that reason, he offered the job to Pierce Brosnan, who turned it down for not taking the character too seriously. Years later, Brosnan thought better of it, going so far as to say that he turned down the role because he was an idiot.

6. Will Smith / Django

Several rumors ran to explain why Will Smith did not accept the role of Django in “Django Unchained”. The first of them realized that the actor had questioned Django’s role in the story. Smith wanted the character to be more important, which would have been denied by director Quentin Tarantino. The actor’s second version was due to creative differences. While Smith didn’t want it to be a revenge story, but a love story, the director refused to change the script.

7. Olivia Wilde / Gamora

8. Al Pacino / Edward Lewis

Al Pacino was the second choice (the first had been Christopher Reeve) to play Edward Lewis in “Pretty Woman”. Despite being the second option, he even filmed several scenes with Julia Roberts. But at a certain point, the actor decided that the role was not suitable for his career, and he quit the job. That’s when Julia Roberts decided to give the producers a hand and asked Richard Gere to accept playing the character.

9. Daryl Hannah / Vivian Ward

Our list features several actors who regretted turning down certain characters. But Daryl Hannah is not one of them. The actress is still happy with her life for having rejected the role, because she thinks that the plot of “Pretty Woman” is degrading for people of the female sex. The opinion was shared by other actresses who turned down the job, such as Michelle Pffeifer and Meg Ryan.

10. Charlie Hunnam / Christian Gray

Before Jamie Dornan was confirmed in the role of Christian Grey, other actors were interested in the job. When the film began shooting, the person who brought the character to life was Charlie Hunnam. However, weeks after filming began, the actor ended up giving up for fear of pressure from fans of the book (who thought that Hunnam was not the ideal actor to live Christian Grey) and for thinking that he could be too marked by the role. Twelve days later, Jamie Dornan accepted the mission to live the protagonist.

11. Jessica Chastain / Maya Hansen

The list of actors who turned down roles from the Marvel universe goes on. Jessica Chastain, for example, had the chance to play Maya Hansen in “Iron Man 3”, but she turned down the job because she felt that a movie inspired by comics tends to leave the actor too marked. In addition, the actress thought that, if she were to act in a production of this nature, she would have to be a more relevant character than a mere citizen.

12. Salma Hayek / Selena

Actress Salma Hayek was invited to audition to live Selena (American pop singer who was quite successful and was murdered in 1995), this at the beginning of the production of the feature. The actress refused for ethical reasons, as she considered it incorrect to benefit from the death of a star: only two weeks passed between Selena’s death and the call that Salma received from the producers. The actress also didn’t like the fact that, for publicity reasons, the casting was open to more than 20,000 people, when in reality, the role was between her and Jennifer Lopez.
