11 Ways to Detect a Liar by Looking at Him for Just 1 Minute

According to statistics, about 90% of the information we receive is based on the gestures of the person speaking. Unconsciously, we read the position of the interlocutor’s body and are able to know, by the timbre of the voice, his state of mind. Even with a certain degree of assurance, we can sometimes see that the person we’re talking to is lying to us just because of their gestures.

O awesome.club read the works of Allan Pease, Lillian Glass and other famous psychologists and chose for you the 11 most frequent gestures that are typical of liars.

1. They open their eyes wide

Psychologists say that liars are not able to maintain long eye contact. However, if a person is deliberately lying and wants to defend his lie by all means, try looking your interlocutor straight in the eye to create an environment of trust.

A distinctive feature is a strong tension in the eye muscles, which arises when a person tries to overcome his desire to look the other way. Because of this, it is often seen that the liar opens his eyes wide.

2. Straighten your shoulders and lift your chin

3. Licking or biting their lips

Police officers call this effect “cotton in the mouth”. A person who has to lie every minute has difficulty speaking and, as a result, their mouth dries up. This can be easily explained: under stress, the autonomic nervous system reduces salivation. If you offer this person water, they are more likely to drink it in large gulps.

4. Limit your own movements

5. Point at you with their index finger

Pointing with the finger is considered one of the most aggressive gestures. If a person answers a question this way, try to divert attention. This is a sign of anger and strong defense. In this way the liar convinces the accuser of his own guilt.

6. Tilt the head to one side

Charles Darwin noticed that people (like animals) tilt their heads to one side if they have a sudden, throbbing interest in something. This is a way to buy time to find an answer to an uncomfortable question. A person can feign an interest in the interlocutor with the help of this movement to hide his true intentions. The one who asked the question will read this gesture subconsciously and will be more loyal to the liar.

7. Scratch the neck

8. Cover the vulnerable parts of the body

Chest, abdomen, private parts: these are the parts of the body that a person tries to cover when they feel worried or cornered. There is a physiological explanation for this gesture: the vegetative system, when under stress (and lying is always a stress), gives a signal for the contraction of the abdominal muscles, and this can even cause painful spasms.

9. They lean on firm objects

10. They like hustle

First, such behavior is peculiar to girls: they fix their hair, remove makeup that doesn’t exist in the corner of their eyes, or fix their clothes. This helps to achieve inner peace by distracting from external threats.

11. They move a little away from the interlocutor

When we talk to a person, we may not even look at his face, but our body
will always be facing her. This suggests that we are open to communication. If a person turns a little to the other side, he may unconsciously be trying to remove the object that causes him discomfort in the visual field.

Bonus: What to do if you can’t see the caller and are talking to them on the phone

Liars often swallow the ends of sentences and speak in a hoarse voice. The louder the voice, the more we tend to believe. A person who wants to lie may consciously or unconsciously lower their voice. This is how compensation manifests itself: a lie that has no basis is compensated for by a harsh, hoarse tone.

At the end of sentences, a liar swallows or speaks softly. This is due to the peculiarities of breathing: the need to deceive instigates a person, his breathing stops and there is simply not enough air to complete the sentence clearly.
