11 Sights That Look Breathtaking in Pictures (But Up Close, Might Not Be Such a Cool Experience)

Many travelers dream of visiting places that have become legendary destinations, such as the Grand Canyon or the ancient city of Machu Picchu. But sometimes places that look amazing in photos turn out to be real disappointments in real life.

We, from incredible.club, we are convinced that if you really want to know a place, you should go. That’s why, in our today’s article, we collected the opinion of people who visited popular destinations, but ended up surprisingly disappointed. Check out!

Glass Bridge over the Grand Canyon

Tourist trap. It takes hours to get there from Las Vegas. They charge 20 bucks to park in the empty desert and another 30 bucks for the bus from the parking lot to the bridge itself (and it’s not that far). Also, you can’t take pictures because they monopolize that job to, of course, sell the pictures later. © TommyHole ****er / RedditI heard they charge $65 to go up the glass bridge. This is crazy. The point of going to the Grand Canyon is to see the beauty on the horizon, not look down. To enjoy the atmosphere of the Canyon, it’s best to rent a car and drive to the center of the national park — this will take about two hours. © ZolaMonster / Reddit

hollywood boulevard

I was born in Los Angeles and would never take a person who was visiting me on Hollywood Boulevard. I would just go there quickly by car. There are far more amazing things to do in Los Angeles than watching Spider-Man fight Batman. © Prolificus1 / Reddit

Ness lake

Loch Ness is located in a remote spot in Scotland known for rumors of a legendary monster. These days, all you’ll see is gray skies and opaque water, plus lots of vendors offering stuffed monster dolls. There are far better places in Scotland than this small, gloomy lake. © Nivedita Nair / Quora

Empire State Building

Because? Because it’s just another office skyscraper in New York. It may have been the tallest building in the world, but it long ago lost that title and is now the 45th tallest building in the world (and the fifth tallest in New York). Yes, it was the building that King Kong climbed in the movie, but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s just a corporate building. © John Smith / Quora

Madame Tussauds Wax Museum

One of London’s most overrated attractions. Before entering, you may have to stand in line for four hours in the hot sun. When you finally get inside, all you have to do is take pictures with wax figures. And you may still have to pay for photos. You then pass statues of pop stars, actors and members of the British royal family. The experience ends with a ride on a train past more puppets. It’s a waste of time and money. I’ve been there ten times as a guide and I can’t stand this place. © Peter Foulds / Quora

machu picchu

The city is crowded with people. Everything is very expensive. The guides just take you up a huge hill and most of the time you are forced to stay with them. We were only three minutes in some parts. This is a distortion of Inca history to please tourists with selfie sticks. © ccut / Reddit

roman coliseum

The coliseum can accommodate up to 3,000 people at a time. Every time someone leaves, they let in a few more tourists. This results in a very long queue. I stood in line from 12pm to 3pm just to get through security. If you have children or the elderly, waiting for three hours can be difficult. Furthermore, the Coliseum is gradually falling apart — literally. © Hitesh Sahu / Quora

Sveti Stefan Island in Montenegro

While traveling around Montenegro a year and a half ago, I made a point of stopping off at the island of Sveti Stefan on the way to Kotor airport. But what’s so disappointing about this location? You cannot explore the island. It was built around 600 years ago and functioned as a fishing village until 1950; now it’s a luxury hotel accessible only to guests willing to pay a minimum of 773 euros a night. The only way to enter is by eating at the restaurant or attending the Sunday service at the local church, but in both cases the hotel staff will escort you throughout the site. Without the slightest chance of exploring the area. Yes, the photos of the island’s streets on the internet are stunning, but we mere mortals will have to be content with a panoramic view of the beach in front, where you can rent two sunbeds and an umbrella for at least 80 euros the day. © Giorgio Taietti / Quora

Three Sisters in Australia

It is very difficult to photograph them. You need to have a camera with a good enough zoom. Also, getting there is not easy, because the road is very steep. I went by bus. It’s pretty cool that nature has “built” this all by itself, but I think the Stone Forest in China is more amazing. Sorry, Australia. © Haryo Hafizh / QuoraThese rocks aren’t all that impressive. I like to go there just to see the view of the valley with the forest and the bluish haze. © Rowan Crouch / Quora

Avenue Champs-Elysees

I find the close-up view of the Arc de Triomphe and Place de la Concorde at both ends of the avenue magnificent. However, the avenue itself has become a large open-air shopping center. It’s crowded and has lost all its charm. I love Paris, but not the Champs-Élysées. © Boris Hawthorgh / QuoraThe Champs-Élysées is a long, wide avenue with a lot of traffic. There are many expensive stores there. So, I only recommend it if you want to go shopping or just admire the windows. © Chris Spencer / Quora

Four Corners (Four States Border)

The Four Corners is located in the most amazing part of the United States. In a few hours you can reach several cool places… But the place itself is just a dry landscape in the middle of nowhere. I’ve always found it hilarious that people drive through some of the most incredible scenery in the world to visit an imaginary boundary of sand. © CaptainNoBoat / RedditIt’s literally in the middle of nowhere, crowded, and it’s just a sign on the ground that says you’re between four states. © sharkyshark303 / Reddit
