Having a curious object related to a film can be as important to fans and collectors as going to the cinema on opening day. However, in an attempt to make quick money from the most devoted fans, resort to merchandising, a commercial promotion technique that aims to reaffirm the compulsive purchases of a brand. But sometimes it gets out of hand, and really quirky and, to tell you the truth, a little useless products are marketed.
O awesome.club presents 11 very illustrative examples of the extent to which the profitability of a film can be exploited. Don’t miss the fun bonus of Star Trek at the end.
1. Tauntaun sleeping bag
Perhaps, this is a product that only fans of Star Wars would like to have… or maybe not. A tauntaun is a fictional creature from the universe created by George Lucas, used as a saddle animal, especially by the rebels on the planet Hoth. The cost of the sleeping bag is almost $300 and it is for sale on eBay.
2. The Dark Whopper from Burger King
when it premiered Spiderman 3Burger King released a special edition called Dark Whopper, basically a regular Whopper burger but with chili sauce and cobweb-shaped fries included in the combo. But it didn’t stop there, because the following summer it was released The dark Knightand the famous sandwich chain launched the same promotion, but claiming that, now, they had been inspired by the dark side of Batman.
3. Shaving kit Transformers
Children like to play at being adults; it is something natural in their growth. However, we still haven’t found a logical relationship between a fake shaving kit and the Transformers… well, maybe transforming cars need a “look pat” every now and then.
4. The monolith of 2001: A Space Odyssey
Who would have thought that one of the most iconic films of Kubrick and science fiction cinema would have its own toy… although not precisely “action”. On April Fools’ Day, 2010, the toy store think geek launched the idea of an object inspired by the mythical black monolith from the film 2001: A Space Odyssey🇧🇷 But the joke was so popular that they decided to make the figure, which is nothing more than a black plastic rectangle.
5. Bella Swan’s Engagement Ring
We all know the success that Twilight had on the big screen, so much so that all fans of the saga wanted to marry Edward Cullen. Well, it seems that her dreams can come (almost) true, since it is possible to acquire the engagement ring that the famous vampire gave to his beloved. The original is made of diamonds and white gold, but on the Internet you can buy imitations ranging from 10 to 90 dollars.
6. The perfume of the Avengers
We’re not sure what exactly a superhero smells like, but after all their epic battles, they probably wear some perfume… or so we hope.
7. Comfortable and furry slippers, like a hobbit’s feet
If you’ve ever wondered what it was like to be a real hobbit (living in a hole, eating five times a day and having house parties), maybe this is as close as you can get to being one. Hobbit slippers are sold on eBay and seem to be quite popular.
8. The telephone Matrix Reloaded
After matrix, the Nokia 8110 became an icon, something like the coolest phone in the world, and everyone wanted to have it. But for the film’s sequel, Samsung signed a deal with the producer to make their own phone, which was a bit of a surprise because it had nothing to do with what people wanted. On the contrary, it was very ugly!
9. Dennis Nedry’s puppet, from dinosaurs Park
the character of Jurassic Park: The dinosaurs Park (1993), Dennis Nedry, an overweight computer programmer with many ambitions, is one of the most remembered not only for his typical Hawaiian shirt, but also for the scene in which a Dilophosaurus attacks him with acid directly in the face. The funny thing is that there is a doll of this character, however, almost unrecognizable!
10. The Oreo Cookie Sandwich game of Thrones
game of Thrones went down in history as one of the most emblematic sagas of our century, so it was only a matter of time before all kinds of merchandise related to the series started to be commercialized. Among them, these Oreo sandwiches engraved with the crests of the houses vying for the throne. This succulent but somewhat pricey dessert is limited edition.
11. The cookbook of Hunger Games
Remember that originally Hunger Games they were books that later became movies, which is relatively common. But what about a movie-inspired cookbook? For example, you can find the bread recipes from Peeta’s father’s bakery, and many others as extravagant as they are decadent from the rich city called Capital. Weird is not it?
Bonus: the alien worm from Genesis, which evolved from the microbes in Spock’s coffin, in Star Trek
In Star Trek III — Looking for Spock, Captain Kirk’s son investigates a planet called “Genesis”, which is incredibly unstable, as any life form that comes into contact with the planet will be subject to the effects of rapid aging and evolution. This includes the microbes present on the surface of Spock’s coffin when he was ejected from the USS Enterprise. Microorganisms began to evolve into orange creatures, which then became gigantic. On eBay, you can buy one of these scenic objects for $500.
