A long-term friendship may even start to feel natural and permanent in your life, but it’s not trivial. Having someone who shares every moment with you since childhood and remains by your side, even after assuming all the responsibilities of adult life, is something rare. People change, they follow different paths and it is natural that some friendships are lost. But, the love of a childhood friend is unconditional and she goes through all the changes with you, even if the “maintenance” of the relationship is more difficult.
Check out some reasons to thank your childhood friend and take a minute out of your day to remind her how important she is.
1. “Thanks for making boring things more fun”
Thank your friend for asking you out and making you laugh after a breakup. For the tense time of college entrance exams, when you went to exams together and the pressure dissolved a little. For the cleaning done together, while you sang some song. For the times when you had company in waiting rooms or bank lines and the service didn’t seem to take that long.
A childhood friend must have been by your side in many boring moments over the years, making them go by faster, easing the boredom or sadness and even turning them into cherished memories.
2. “Thank you for always making time for me”
Things get more complicated as we grow up and the time available is no longer that of childhood – after all, college, work, relationships, children and other responsibilities demand dedication and keep us busy. Despite this, best friends always make time for you. Whether arranging dates, making a phone call, or sending a simple message, they are setting aside moments of their lives to dedicate to you.
3. “Thanks for listening to all my complaints”
This friend has heard you complain about your job, teachers, family, boss, first flirt, all dating, other friends. She patiently listened as you ranted about everything that was going wrong in your life and received detailed accounts of each identity crisis. Having someone who chooses to remain available as a listener to all the problems of a lifetime is not common; don’t forget to say thanks for that.
4. “Thank you for believing in me”
The childhood friend has seen you facing many bars, has seen the failures, the overcoming and the victories. She knows what you are capable of and sees her potential even when you don’t see it yourself. This is likely the friend who supports your plans, strengthens your dreams, and helps you overcome insecurities – all because she believes in you.
5. “Thanks for giving in a few moments”
There are situations where you and your friend don’t agree or don’t want the same thing, it’s natural. And sometimes, for things to work out, someone has to give in. It’s likely that both of you have already done this, but don’t forget to say thank you for the times your friend gave up her will in the name of the pair. It could have been choosing a restaurant for lunch or what movie you would see at the cinema; Small details like these build friendship.
6. “Thanks for taking care of me”
It could be escorting you to a doctor’s appointment, comforting you after a layoff, giving you a ride, or getting you home safely when you’ve had too much to drink at that party. Even if you get scolded every now and then, you know it’s because she’s taking care of you.
7. “Thank you for welcoming my new friends”
The oldest friend, even if she is one of the most jealous, at one time or another needs to welcome her new friendships. And not just friendships: your friend has already had to welcome romances, relationships and other people who were part of her life for some time. This is how groups end up forming, you introduce your friend to everyone and are happy with her approval. For someone who has been with you for so long, it may not be easy to “lose space” and share your time with new people. Thank her for the effort she makes to always be close to you, regardless of others.
8. “Thank you for understanding exactly what I’m feeling”
Over the years, your childhood friend has gotten to know you better than anyone else – even better than your own family. Therefore, few words are enough to convey to her what you are feeling. Or no words: just one look and you can understand each other. She knows what she can and can’t tell you at the right times, and it’s a relief not to have to explain herself every time.
9. “Thanks for keeping it a secret”
Your oldest friend can also be your biggest confidant and the first person you turn to when you need a secret kept. It was to her that you told her about your first flirt, shared your anguish and confessed things you would be ashamed to admit to other people. And she always knows how to keep the secret, even if it requires a lot and is not simple.
10. “Thank you for sharing a lifetime”
After all, you’ve spent more than half your life together. You know each other’s families and are treated as such, the photo albums are filled with her face, you studied, worked, traveled, slept, partied and had fun together. It is present in most of your memories – good or bad. We can’t choose family and relationships come and go, but your friend has an abiding presence and every day you choose to stay that way.
Did you identify with any of the items? So, you sure are a lucky person to have someone like that. Put the other chores aside for a moment and go thank your friend!
