In the difficult process of producing films, some big bets end up failing. And there are those that nobody believes in for different reasons and that make only a few producers willing to take risks for them.

However, in many cases the latter turned out to be classics that contributed to the history of cinema and became a reflection of perseverance. They teach us that, when we believe an idea is good, we shouldn’t let ourselves be carried away by prejudices. Sometimes unusual features make the end result something special, a resounding success.

If we take a film whose plot is based on a western couple who are to be married under the Greek Orthodox rites, we add the intervention of the protagonist’s entire family (with enthusiasm and customs that give free rein to the humor) and one more secondary character who thinks that all problems are solved as if by magic, it is very easy to think that you are destined for success.

In fact, the film is inspired by a play by Nia Vardalos, which was well received by the public. However, no producer was interested in taking her to the movies. Apparently, Nia didn’t see the potential either, because when Tom Hanks and his wife called her to present the proposal to produce it, the actress thought it was a prank and hung up. Finally, when they reached an agreement and took the story to the big screen, it was a success, being considered one of the most successful independent productions in history.

It’s hard to believe that anyone ever thought that a movie in which Zac Efron sings and acts could become a flop, but of course, at the time, the actor was not well known. In fact, as many know, High School Musical it was the work that catapulted him to fame, as did his co-stars Vanessa Hudgens and Ashley Tisdale.

Perhaps the fact that the juvenile plot in which the popular boy falls in love with an airhead was not innovative made the producer invest a low budget and launch it directly on television. However, the story was mixed with characters that overflowed with personality and very “catchy” songs, which made the audience love it from the beginning.

Its success reached the point where it appeared as the producer’s hit of the year. Subsequently, two sequels to the film were released, one of them in cinemas.

This film, which marked the teenage audience of the 90s with its striking language and clothing, did not have low expectations on the part of the producers. However, they did not expect the resounding success, which placed it as the second most watched film in its opening week.

Who also did not believe in the project were the protagonists Alicia Silverstone, who almost rejected the role of Cher, considering that the young woman was too “materialistic”, and Paul Rudd, who initially did not like the script and auditioned for the role without much interest, until he delved into the story. Thankfully, the first impression is not always the one that lasts, after all, the film would not have been the same without them.

Internationally, its sequels, such as The Ballad of the Pistolero, starring Antonio Banderas, had greater relevance around the world. But the truth is, they couldn’t have existed if the producer hadn’t bet $7,000 on The Mariachiin 1992.

That amount of money is really ridiculous for a movie, even for a low budget. It was so little money that, investing a large part of it in a camera, director Robert Rodriguez had to take care of many important aspects, such as photography, set design, editing and even sound. Using light bulb lighting and a cast of amateur actors, the reward for so much effort was reflected in the success of a film that needed no frills to delight the masses.

With an original title that’s practically a joke (“shark”: shark, “-nado”: tornado) and some questionable special effects, sharknado sought to amuse more than provide a deep story. That was one of the reasons for its success in achieving a crazy and purposeless plot that did not become a complete parody.

It was a television production destined for oblivion and, for the producer, the name was funny. With a low budget, he hired a screenwriter to give free rein to his creativity.

What nobody expected was the furor that the film would arouse in the public, who not only approved it, but demanded sequels. So its screenwriter, Thunder Levin, who had already finished the story, had to rewrite a script to satisfy the masses.

So far, the saga has released six films, whose premise is hungry sharks flying and destroying the city. Let’s be honest: synopses like this don’t come across often.

Many may find it hard to believe that Rocky appears in this list. The truth is that when screenwriter and protagonist Sylvester Stallone presented the proposal to many producers, almost all of them rejected it, stating that the plot was tacky, predictable and boring.

Fortunately, the artist was determined to be the protagonist of his story and after countless efforts, he finally got a producer willing to bet on his film, which ended up winning the Oscar.

See that the picture is somber, and yet this story as macabre as it was successful was the beginning of a saga with the same brand, released directly in video stores. The screenwriters, who had put some of their pocket money into producing it, did not expect that audiences would be willing to pay for a movie ticket, as it was not the style they were used to. When an idea is innovative, few minds are able to elucidate its potential. The company decided to invest in the project more because of the trust they had in George, not the potential they could see in the story. This film remained on paper for years, as several studios rejected the idea of ​​producing it. A while later, finally, a production company accepted, but the story did not end there. The screenwriter was unable to reach an agreement with the producers and was fired, only to be hired again when his replacement resigned. And as if that were not enough, after two years the producer decided to scrap the project completely.

Fortunately, one of the original producers who believed in the script decided to buy back the rights to bring it to the big screen. The patience and determination of everyone involved bore fruit: when it was screened at independent film festivals, major corporations offered to distribute it to cinemas around the world.

This indie film has a snarky, unpopular anti-heroine protagonist with no hint of caring. The girl is going through a teenage pregnancy, and the baby’s father is her “nerd” friend. The film did not appear to be of interest to teenagers or the general public. However, it turned out to be a resounding success due to all the unusual elements in films of this genre. And it ended up winning the Oscar for best screenplay.
