10 Korean Films Everyone Should See

Korean cinema has been gaining worldwide fame for several years, and there are many good reasons for this. Their scripts stand out for their subtle treatment of human nature, directors lined up stories in poetic, precise and highly professional ways, and the actors, even in supporting roles, present us with impeccable and moving performances.

The Taxi Driver (2017)

The film tells real facts occurred between May 18 and 27, 1980 in Gwangju, a city where the population revolted against the dictatorial government of Chun Doo-hwan. Nothing that happened there reached the rest of the world and the local media distorted the facts, passing them off as a communist rebellion. Peter, a German journalist who discovered what was happening thanks to a fact that another foreign colleague let slip, decided to go to the place of conflict, even though the city was under siege, with all access blocked by the military. To achieve his goal, he hired a taxi driver, agreeing to pay a good sum when they reached their destination. The driver, who was unaware of the danger he was exposing himself to, was a widower and, in order to do the work, he had to leave his little daughter alone at his home in Seoul. As events unfold, he will face a difficult choice: risk his life to do the right thing or return as soon as possible to his daughter.

The film is directed by Jang Hoon and stars the famous and outstanding South Korean actor Song Kang-ho, who plays Kim Man-seob, the taxi driver. The German Thomas Kretschmann plays the role of the correspondent Peter.

Hello Ghost (2010)

After several failed suicide attempts, Kang Sang-man (Cha Tae-hyun) insists once more, but upon awakening from a brief clinical death he discovers that he can now see four ghosts that, in addition to following him around, prevent him from resuming his suicide attempts. To get rid of them, he must lend them his body to satisfy their unfulfilled desires.

Manufactured City (2017)

Kwon must prove his innocence and, in order to do so, he will have the unexpected help of his virtual partners, with whom he will have to face a powerful and intelligent friend.

Directed by Park Kwang-hyun, the film stands out for the performance of the famous actor of the new generation, Ji Chang-wook, and the stellar portrayal of Oh Jung-se in the role of the villain of the story. A production with lots of special effects and an intelligent and original idea.

Castaway from the Moon (2009)

Distraught over debt, Kim Seung-Geun (Jung Jae-young) throws himself off a bridge into the Han River, but survives, and appears on a small island in the middle of the river that runs through Seoul. There, freed from the pressures of capitalism and the modern world, he will regain his love for life, but he will soon discover that he is being watched by a woman who sends him messages in bottles that she throws at night from the bridge. She is Kim Jung-yeon (Jung Ryeo-won), a woman who has been suffering from social phobia for 3 years because of a large scar on her face, the result of an accident. A recluse in her room, where she sleeps 11 hours a day, she creates a fictional world on a blog, counts the calories she consumes and exercises to stay in shape and feel like she’s had a busy day. The Empty House (2004)

A subtle love story between Sun-hwa (played by Lee Seun-yeon), a beautiful ex-model mistreated by her wealthy husband, and a young man who inhabits other people’s homes in the absence of their owners (Tae-suk, incarnate). by Jae-hui). Colony Anarchist (2017)

One multi-award winning story inspired by biography of anarchist activist Park Yeol (Lee Je-hoon), arrested along with his lover Fumiko Kaneko (Choi Hee-seo) for their subversive activities in 1919 Japan. The couple’s flamboyant and provocative nature attracts the attention of the press, and soon becomes a real obstacle for the Japanese government, which tries to shape the media and reality in its favor, while thousands of Koreans are massacred in the country.

Written by Hwang Seong-gu, and directed by Lee Joon-ik, the film is another example of South Korean cinematic work that requires a prior supply of tissues.

The World of Us (2016)

In this movie, once again, you can enjoy Korean children’s incredible acting ability🇧🇷 The story is about the difficulties students have to go through as they learn to relate to their peers. Little Sun (Choi Soo-in) suffers contempt and teasing from her peers. On the first day of summer vacation, he meets Jia (Seol Hye-in), a newcomer who becomes his only friend. Hope (2013)

The story of So-won (Lee Re), an 8-year-old girl who is a victim of brutal sexual abuse, unfortunately based on the girl’s real life who had to recover from irreversible physical damage, as well as go through psychological trauma in the midst of a mishandled trial that became a media sensation. So-won was able to identify his attacker, and while the man was arrested at home a few days later, he was given a sentence of just 12 years in prison, causing great outrage and pain in the family and society as a whole. The case took on such importance that even South Korean President Lee Myung-bak had to publicly apologize for the inefficiency of the court in charge of the case.

The film, directed by Lee Joon-ik, tries to focus on the desire to move on from the family devastated by the tragedy and the importance of having the support of friends and the entire community to regain emotional stability in an abuse case. The interpretation of Lee Re stands out, who received several national and international awards for his work.

Poetry (2010)

Another multi-award winning film, inspired by a true story, which shows the unique and extraordinary way of South Koreans to tell the world of their characters. The plot begins with the suicide of a girl, repeatedly abused in her school’s laboratory by a group of students. One of the abusers is the grandson of Yang Mija (Yoon Jeong-hee), a 66-year-old woman who is diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and has enrolled in a poetry workshop in an attempt to learn to express the beauty of the world with words. The plot, based on tragic, is told with a touching lyrical subtlety, and plunges the viewer into the depths of the human soulleaving the feeling of having seen a true masterpiece.

Written and directed by Lee Chang-dong, the film won Best Screenplay at the Cannes Film Festival, Best Film and Actress at the Grand Bell Awards, and even an Oscar nomination in the Best Actress category for South Korean film veteran Yoon. Jeong-hee.
