Over the past few decades, cinema has become a global industry. Thus, the great productions are shown in movie theaters all over the world. And, in most cases, it is necessary to adapt the films for certain countries due to cultural, linguistic and other issues. Some of these modifications are so interesting for the implemented details that we hardly notice the difference in relation to the original versions.
At the awesome.club, we show the amusing and interesting modifications made to some films, to adapt them to their international versions.
1. Moana had its name changed to Vaiana in Europe
In the European versions of the film Moana — A Sea of Adventures, the title and the name of the protagonist were modified and became Vaiana. The reasons for this change were due to the fact that the name Moana is a registered trademark in several European countries and therefore not legally available for use. “Vaiana”, a Tahitian name meaning “cave water”, was selected to replace the original.
2. The annotations change in Captain America 2: The Winter Soldier
In the film, we see how Captain America shows his list of information to update himself, after spending a long time frozen. These notes were adapted in different ways in the film’s 10 international releases, depending on the country where the film was to be shown.
3. Jeff Gorvette changes his colors in different versions of Cars 2
Jeff Gorvette is a famous automobile champion invited to compete in the Tokyo World Grand Prix, in the film Cars 2. In the international versions of the animation, the painting changes completely to adapt to each country, with the voices of professional pilots of each nationality. However, this adaptation is relatively subtle and can only be seen in the scene where Jeff meets Lightning McQueen. In the other races, the look is the original.
4. The typewriter scene in the movie The illuminated
One of the many most remembered scenes from the film The illuminated it shows us Jack writing the same prayer over and over again. In its original version, the written phrase is “All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy🇧🇷 The words can be interpreted as the popular saying: “God helps those who get up early”. However, in the Italian version, the catchphrase had to be modified to adapt to the original meaning and was replaced by “Il mattino ha l’oro in bocca”, which can be translated as “The early bird catches the larva🇧🇷
5. Taco Bell changed to Pizza Hut in O demolisher
In the film, with a futuristic plot that takes place in 2032, there is a brief sequence in which some characters are invited to dinner at a Taco Bell restaurant. However, in post-production the establishment changed to Pizza Hut, due to the fact that the Mexican food company was not well known outside the United States at the time. For that reason, the producers had to look for other networks of fast food interested in being part of the production.
6. Bomb Voyage’s name is changed to Folamour
At the beginning of the movie The Incredibles, we meet the supervillain and bomb expert Bomb Voyage, who, in addition to committing several robberies in the city, is Mr. Incredible. The phonetic meaning of his name alludes to the French expression “Bon Voyage” (“Good trip”). However, in the French version of the film, her name is changed to “Folamour”, which means “crazy love”.
7. Alfredo Gusteau’s documents in Ratatouille
In the Disney movie Ratatouille, French culture is a central part of the plot. In the scenes that present texts in French, the writings were translated into English, so that the North American audience could read them.
8. Mamá Coco had its name changed in Brazil, as well as the title of the film
In the Pixar film, which explores Mexican culture, we can fall in love with “Mamá Coco”. But do you know who she is? In the Brazilian version, Inês. Yes, “Coco” is the title of the movie in other languages and a colloquially used nickname for women named “Socorro”. However, as we know, in Portuguese the word is synonymous with “excrement”. For obvious reasons, in Brazil, the title of the film was changed to “Viva — A vida é uma festa”.
9. In the introduction of University Monsters, scare proof is shown in different languages
At the beginning of the movie University Monsters, we can see a brief introduction to the film with scenes from the childhood of little Mike Wazowsky. When adapting to different countries, the “scare exam” (“Prova de Susto”) was translated into French and Brazilian versions.
10. The Book of UP: High Adventures changed in the French adaptation
One of the most important memories in the film Up: High Adventures it is a beautiful book in which memories are recorded over the years. Its cover was also translated and adapted for the French version of the film.
